Agricultural intensification has led to widespread declines in wildlife biodiversity across many taxa. North American bats provide valuable services for agriculture yet basic ecological understanding of how bats use habitat in intensely agricultural areas is lacking. We examined the movements and resource selection of the federally endangered Indiana bat (Myotis sodalis) in a highly agricultural landscape in central Ohio, USA. We recorded nocturnal movements of 36 Indiana bats during the summers of 2009 and 2010; mean (±SD) fixed‐kernel home range area was 212.0 ± 132.4 ha. We examined second‐ and third‐order habitat selection and found that bats selected all habitat types more strongly than cropland at all analysis scales. Woodland was selected more strongly than any other habitat with the exception of open water. However, although bats heavily used a wooded stream corridor, movement was not restricted by large expanses of cropland and bats traversed open, non‐forested areas >1 km across to reach small, isolated, wooded patches. The limits and to what extent Indiana bats can persist using small, isolated habitat patches are unknown, but our data support continued emphasis on conservation of riparian habitats and wooded patches within agricultural landscapes. © 2014 The Wildlife Society, 2014.

Bachman's Sparrows at the northern periphery of their range: home range size and microhabitat selection

Populations of Bachman's Sparrows (Peucaea aestivalis) have declined range‐wide since the late 1960s. Populations at the periphery of their range have exhibited some of the steepest declines, and these sparrows are now rare or extirpated over much of the northern extent of their historical range. To better understand the spatial ecology of Bachman's Sparrows in this region of decline, we examined microhabitat selection and determined the home range sizes of radio‐tagged male Bachman's Sparrows (N = 37) in the Coastal Plain of North Carolina in 2014 and 2015. From April to July, we located males 1–2 times daily for 5–6 d per week. We measured vegetation structure in home ranges using 5‐m‐radius plots centered on a subset of 10 randomly selected telemetry locations as well as in available unused locations 50 m and in a random direction from each telemetry location. Mean size of home ranges (7.9 ha) was larger than estimates reported in most previous studies, with differences among studies possibly due, at least in part, to differences in the characteristics of habitats where studies were conducted. The home ranges of Bachman's Sparrows in our study had greater densities of woody and dead vegetation than unused areas. Although generally considered detrimental to the presence of Bachman's Sparrows, the presence of some woody vegetation in frequently burned (i.e., ≤ 3‐yr return interval) longleaf pine (Pinus palustris) communities like those in our study may be important in providing song perches for males and cover from attacking predators. Bachman's Sparrows in our study showed clear selection for several vegetation characteristics linked to frequent fire. Management strategies that approximate historical fire regimes in longleaf pine ecosystems should continue to be promoted as essential tools for the conservation of Bachman's Sparrows.

Although radio telemetry can provide useful information, the possible negative effects of transmitters, including biased results and detrimental effects on the birds, must also be considered. Several investigators have examined the effects of transmitters on larger birds, but few have examined their possible long‐term effects, as assessed by return rates, on small passerines. We examined the possible negative effects of transmitters on a small (15.5 g) passerine. We used glue to attach radio transmitters to 40 male Swainson's Warblers (Limnothlypis swainsonii) at two study sites in Arkansas in 2005 and 2006. To assess possible effects of transmitters on survival, we compared the following‐year return rates of radio‐tagged birds to birds that were captured and color banded, but did not receive transmitters. Least squared mean return rates for all birds ranged between 0.46 and 0.57. We found no significant difference in the following‐year return rate of radio‐tagged and nonradio‐tagged birds. In addition, we found no significant differences in return rates between study sites or years, and no significant interactions between any combination of radio transmitter (radio tagged or not), site, and year. Our results indicate that attachment of transmitters did not affect return rates of male Swainson's Warblers and that the glue‐on technique is a good option for short‐term studies of small passerines.
