Factors Influencing Farmers’ Adoption of Climate-Smart Agriculture in Rice Production in Vietnam’s Mekong Delta

Abstract: Farmers' adoption behavior of climate-smart agriculture (CSA) is a big factor in the sustainability of agricultural growth in the areas of economic, environmental, and social development. This study explores the antecedents of adoption behavior of multiple CSA, including soil and water management, yield management, and weather risk management, among farmers in Vietnam's Mekong Delta. “…The extension services are crucial to advice the farmers [181] in the implementation of the CSA practices [182], nonetheless the particularities of these services in some countries may compromise their contributions [183]. In Vietnam, for example, the adoption of CSA practices by the rice farmers is influenced by the following variables: perceptions about the climate change, educational level, credit and capital availability, land tenure, farm size, availability of extension services, and access to markets [184]. In Nigeria the choice of adaptation practices is influenced by the following dimensions: age, land tenure, extension services, gender, farm size, assets, experience, and credit availability [185].…”

“…Studies conducted in Vietnam focused on the effectiveness of potential and priority CSATs (e.g., Nguyen et al 2020 ; CCAFS-SEA 2016b ; Nghia et al 2015 ) as well as the factors that influence farmers to adopt one or a combination of CSATs (e.g., Tran et al 2020 ; Luu 2020 ; Nguyen and Nguyen 2019 ; Le et al 2014a , b ). Key factors affecting farmers’ adoption of CSATs were found to include socio-demographic features, risk perception, social capital, or geographical location.…”

“…Thus, focusing on farmers' intention at this stage is especially critical. Farmers' intention, behavior, and decision on farmland management were generally influenced by their gender, age, education, family size, income (Liu and Chen, 2012;Liu and Tan, 2006;Luu, 2020;Malawska et al, 2014;Seroa da Motta and Ortiz, 2018;Thinda et al, 2020;Zhu et al, 2010), and benefit expectations (Hernandez-Espallardo et al, 2013). In terms of variables, the influencing factors were mainly related to farmer or household characteristics.…”
