Factors Influencing Farmer Adoption of Portable Computers for Site-Specific Management: A Case Study for Cotton Production

Abstract: Personal digital assistants (PDA) and handheld global positioning systems (GPS) have become increasingly important in cotton production but little is known about their use. This research analyzed the adoption of PDA/handheld GPS devices in cotton production. A younger farmer who used a computer in farm management and had a positive perception of Extension had a greater likelihood of adopting the devices. In addition, farmers who used complementary remote sensing, plant mapping, and grid soil sampling informati… Show more

“…Several authors have verified that increasing age reduces the likelihood of PFT adoption. Young farmers, with longer planning horizons, may be more involved in more innovative farming [17,88,91,94,99,100].…”

“…Farmers using laptops or handheld computers in the field (LP) were hypothesized to observe changes in fertilizer use with VRT management, but the direction of the change was unclear (increase, decrease, or no change). The use of these devices allows farmers to verify and enhance the accuracy of data collected using site-specific information technologies, leading to more accurate estimation of the connections between those technologies, VRT management plans, and fertilizer use (Walton et al, 2010).…”

“…Cotton area farmed (CA) was hypothesized to be associated with changes in fertilizer use. Larger operations are more likely to face managerial challenges posed by field fertility heterogeneity, and therefore more likely to experience changes in fertilizer use from VRT input management (Roberts et al, 2004;Torbett et al, 2007;Walton et al, 2010).…”

“…Of the remaining questionnaires, 1,215 were returned completed for a response rate of 10 percent. The low response rate might be due to the complexity and length of the questionnaire and the fact that, at the time of the survey, cotton prices were low and therefore cotton farmers may not have been interested in making investments in new technologies (Walton et al 2010).…”

“…The selection process may require time to search and process information (e.g., opportunity costs), and access fees for information services. In this study, farmers reporting household incomes greater than $150,000 were considered high-income farmers (Walton et al 2008(Walton et al , 2010. Higher income levels may facilitate access to consulting services complementing new technologies (Rogers 1983).…”
