Factors influencing audiologists’ perception of moral climate in the workplace

Abstract: For those working in adult rehabilitation, moral distress is most likely to occur as the result of conflicting goals between the organisation and the audiologist. There is a need to regulate the practice at an organisational as well as individual level to ensure the focus remains on ethical practice.

“…Specifically, increased moral distress was associated with poor scores on the managerial and peer support subscales. These findings are of relevance to Simpson et al's earlier study in moral distress 18 in which the 'performance pressure' associated with device sales for audiologists working in adult rehabilitation was linked with reduced job satisfaction. Kendall et al 37 describes how in order to maintain and enhance productivity, workers can find work practices scrutinised by others on the team.…”

“…8 The concept of moral distress originally rose to prominence in the nursing field, [9][10][11][12] although has more recently been investigated in other health professions, such as occupational therapy, 13 sports medicine, 14 pharmacy, 15 speech therapy 16,17 and audiology. 18 Moral distress has been linked to negative consequences for both clinician and client. 17,19 It has been found to have a negative impact on the mental and physical wellbeing of practitioners, their provision of care, and overall job satisfaction.…”

“…This will not always be an option for clinicians and systemic mechanisms to support clinicians to uphold their ethical and professional values may be needed. While this discussion focussed on audiology education and on individual change, it must also mention a need for systems to play their part (Simpson et al 2018).…”

“…Over a prolonged period of time, negotiating ethical tensions can manifest as emotional distress, physiological stress, compassion fatigue and burnout, disengagement from patients and attrition (Pauly, Varcoe, and Storch 2012). This is especially concerning at present as workforce shortages are looming in audiology (Windmill and Freeman 2013) and working conditions may lead to a deteriorating moral climate (Simpson et al 2018). Audiology is certainly not alone in its experience of ethical tensions (Bushby et al 2015;Durocher et al 2016;Jameton 1985;Kinsella, Bossers, and Ferreira 2008;Opacich 1997;Storch and Rodney 2009).…”
