Factors for improving reproductive performance of sows and herd productivity in commercial breeding herds

Abstract: We review critical factors associated with reproductive performance of female breeding pigs, their lifetime performance and herd productivity in commercial herds. The factors include both sow-level and herd-level factors. High risk sow-level groups for decreasing reproductive performance of female pigs are low or high parity, increased outdoor temperature, decreased lactation feed intake, single inseminations, increased lactation length, prolonged weaning-to-first-mating interval, low birth weight or low prewe… Show more

“…Though the superiority of natural mating in both studies is vivid and indeed, this study found a higher litter size (12.47) than that of the Indian study, which was also done at a private farm. Low parity females especially pregnant gilts and primiparous sows have also been reported elsewhere to have lower reproductive performance than sows in parities between second and fifth parity (Koketsu et al, 2017). Sow fertility is also closely associated with varying doses of semen volume and spermatozoa count for AI (Apic et al, 2015).…”

“…Reproductive herd life days was defined as the number of days from the date that the gilts was first-inseminated to its removal [18]. Lifetime NPD was defined as the number of days when a female was neither gestating nor lactating during her reproductive herd life.…”

“…Відомо, що якість і благополуччя поросят можуть бути поставлені під загрозу, коли плодючість свиноматок генетично підвищена до високого рівня, а генетичні поліпшення не спрямовані на збільшення кількості функціональних сосків і молочності маток (Koketsu et al, 2017).…”
