Cylindrospermopsis raciborskii, an invasive freshwater cyanobacterium, originated from the tropics but has spread to temperate zones over the last few decades. Its northernmost populations in Europe occur in North German lakes. How such dramatic changes in its biogeography are possible and how its population dynamics in the newly invaded habitats are regulated are still unexplained. We therefore conducted a long-term (1993-2005) study of two German lakes to elucidate the mechanisms behind C. raciborskii population dynamics and to identify the abiotic constraints on its development. Our data revealed that pelagic populations of C. raciborskii thrived for three months during the summer, contributing up to 23% of the total cyanobacteria biovolume. Population sizes varied greatly between years without exhibiting any distinct long-term trends. In the annual lifecycle, C. raciborskii filaments emerged in the pelagic habitat when the temperature rose above 15-17 degrees C. At that time, mean photosynthetically active radiation in the mixed water column (I (mix)) overstepped its maximum. Rates of population net increase were highest at the beginning of the season (0.15-0.28 day(-1)), declined continuously over time, and were significantly positively correlated with I (mix). This indicates that the onset of the pelagic population is temperature-mediated and that I (mix) controls its growth. Since I (mix) peaks before the population onset, the time of germination is of crucial importance for successful development. To test this hypothesis, we designed a model to simulate pelagic population size, starting at different dates in the annual cycle. Moving the population onset forward by 30 days resulted in a doubling of the population size. We therefore conclude that an earlier rise in water temperature associated with climate change has promoted the spread of C. raciborskii to the temperate zone. Earlier warming permits earlier germination, thereby shifting the pelagic populations to a phase with higher I (mix), which advances growth and the population establishment.

The aim of this research was to test whether NH 4 ? and NO 3 -affect the growth, P demand, cell composition and N 2 fixation of Cylindrospermopsis raciborskii under P limitation. Experiments were carried out in P-limited (200 lg l -1 PO 4 -P) chemostat cultures of C. raciborskii using an inflowing medium containing either 4,000 lg l -1 NH 4 -N, 4,000 lg l -1 NO 3 -N or no combined N. The results showed the cellular N:P and C:P ratios of C. raciborskii decreased towards the Redfield ratio with increasing dilution rate (D) due to the alleviation of P limitation. The cellular C:N and carotenoids:chlorophyll-a ratios also decreased with D, predominantly as a result of an increase in the chlorophyll-a and N content. The NH 4 ? and NO 3 -supply reduced the P maintenance cell quota of C. raciborskii. Consequently, the biomass yield of the N 2 -grown culture was significantly lower. The maximum specific growth rate of N 2 -grown culture was also the lowest observed. It is suggested that these differences in growth parameters were caused by the P and energy requirement for heterocyte formation, nitrogenase synthesis and N 2 fixation. N 2 fixation was partially inhibited by NO 3 -and completely inhibited by NH 4? . It was probably repressed through the high N content of cells at high dissolved N concentrations. These results indicate that C. raciborskii is able to grow faster and maintain a higher biomass under P limitation where a sufficient supply of NH 4 ? or NO 3 -is maintained. Information gained about the species-specific nutrient and pigment stoichiometry of C. raciborskii could help to access the degree of nutrient limitation in water bodies.

High frequency time series of dissolved oxygen (DO), delayed chlorophyll fluorescence (Chl) and relevant background variables were recorded on nearly 900 d during 7 yr in large, shallow, meso-eutrophic Lake Balaton (Hungary). Novel models were developed for coupled simulation of diel dynamics of DO and Chl using sequential learning and uncertainty assessment in a Bayesian framework. Despite the generally good model fit for both variables, the uncertainty of the metabolic estimates was high, due primarily to the identification problem of individual metabolic processes. Deviations between observed and simulated DO concentrations suggested that neglect of transient stratification might be responsible for the bulk of the systematic model errors. Net ecosystem production (NEP) was uncertain. Unless air-water oxygen exchange can be estimated from direct measurements, the free-water DO method cannot reliably estimate NEP. Gross primary production (GPP) could satisfactorily be hindcasted assuming non-linear multiplicative dependence on Chl, water temperature and light. Hindcast of community respiration (CR) was less successful, possibly due to the impact of local benthic respiration. Results suggested a major shift in lake metabolism at about 168C. Below and above this temperature, 70% and 90% of net primary production could be utilized by heterotrophs within a day, respectively. Indirect evidence suggested that biomass-specific net primary production was determined by phosphorus. The large difference between reproductive rates and net growth rates estimated from GPP and Chl and from daily change in Chl, respectively indicated that loss rates of phytoplankton were as important determinants of algal dynamics as reproductive rates.
