Factors Determining the Development of Small Farms in Central and Eastern Poland

Abstract: The agrarian structure in Poland is dominated by small farms; the large share of these is a result of historical consequences. The economy has pushed small farms toward economic efficiency, which in farming often translates into increasing the scale of production. The primary objective of this research was to present the directions of the changes in the number of small farms in Central and Eastern Poland and to indicate the factors determining their functioning and development. The research was based on a rand… Show more

“…The first step of the applied methodology (Figure 3) included the method of multivariate analysis. Multivariate analysis is widely used in spatial research as well as in rural research and delimitation [3,14,17,18,31,49,[60][61][62][63][64][65][66][67][68][69][70][71][72]. In this study, factor analysis (FA) was used, which relies on the principal component method (PCA) to identify key factors that describe rural areas.…”

“…DEA is an evaluation method based on the relative effectiveness of input-output data. It is widely used in agricultural economics and other fields [25][26][27]. The advantages of this method are as follows: First, it does not need to set a detailed function form, which avoids errors in model setting caused by subjective reasons [28,29].…”

“…This has a twofold effect: firstly, the standard of living of farmers increases and it is possible to invest surpluses in the development of farms, and secondly, given the constant volume of agricultural production, labour resources are elevated to other sectors of the economy. Hornowski et al (2020) stated that work outside agriculture was the primary source of income in 82% of the Polish farms with an area of up to 15 ha. This is due to the low work efficiency of such farms, but also results in farmers not being interested in the development of their farms.…”

“…Similar results were obtained by Jitea and Pocol (2014) for agriculture in Romania. Hornowski et al (2020) indicates that operating subsidies in small farms in Poland make it possible to maintain the level of personal income of farmers at an acceptable level, and to a lesser extent have a pro-development function. To stimulate development, the use of subsidies that directly support investment is needed.…”
