Factors Determining Migrant Remittances: The Case of Greece

Abstract: "In this study we review the literature regarding the theory and the empirical evidence regarding migrants' remittance behavior, and we examine the flow and determinants of remittances from Greek migrants for the period 1961 to 1991. The main body of data is for remittances to Greece from Germany, but for some years data are available for remittances from Belgium and Sweden as well. The objective of this study is to test the significance of certain factors in terms of their effects on remittances to Greece. Th… Show more

“…Most cross-country empirical studies on macroeconomic determinants of remittances tend to use the United States of America (USA) as the migrant-host country. A few other authors including Elbadawi and Rocha (1992), Lianos (1997), andBouhgaHagbe (2004) made attempts at using countries other than the USA as the migrant-host nation in country-specific studies at the macro-level, with the focus on bilateral remittances. In the case of SSA countries, however, majority of the migrants, at least 70 percent, migrate to reside in other SSA countries.…”

“…-Exchange rate volatility (log): This variable has also been calculated as a 5-year non-overlapping standard deviation of the nominal exchange rate with the US dollar and is intended to capture the risk and uncertainty caused by exchange rate movements. The value of remittances in domestic currency depends on the market exchange rate, and volatile exchange rates increase the risk and uncertainty which in turn influence the migrant workers' decision to remit (Lianos 1997, Higgins et al 2004). -Capital account openness: This variable is constructed by Chinn and Ito (2008).…”

“…Several studies, including Lianos (1997) and El Sakka and McNabb (1999), incorporate them in the regression as the first moment (level or change). Studies that include them as the second moment (volatility) are mentioned above.…”

“…Most research on remittances has focused on the implicit contract migrants have with family members in the home community (i.e., Stark and Lucas, 1988;Stark, 1991;Lianos, 1997;Leinbach and Watkins, 1998;Menjivar, et al, 1998) or on income redistribution and community development (i.e., Barhan and Boucher, 1998;Conway and Cohen, 1998;Jones, 1998;Rodriguez, 1998). We argue that, for Salvadorans, remittances serve as a form of return migration in the transnational circulation process.…”
