Factors contributing to communication skills development in cochlear implanted children

Abstract: Communication skills of CI children evaluated by FAPCI are falling behind normatives for normal hearing children 18.6 months on the average. Hearing age, duration and intensity of rehabilitation have positive predictive value for communication skills development. Later identification of hearing loss and later cochlear implantation lead to delayed development of communication skills.

“…Rehabilitation begins as soon as hearing loss is detected, which lasts for several years, depending on the age of implantation. It could be continued further if the child needs more support; even after entering school (Ostojić et al 2015). Speech and hearing rehabilitation gives meaning to the sound perceived through the cochlear implant (Ling 2002).…”

“…In order to guarantee better development results in children with hearing loss, studies suggest that the therapeutic process with electronic devices should be started early, associated with appropriate measures of habilitation with specialized speech therapy, augmented with intense planning of family guidance and counseling. This premise accompanied by other variables can influence the development of auditory skills, the process of acquisition and development of spoken communication, in addition to the insertion and participation of children in different environments, with better results on self-confidence, autonomy, well-being, happiness, schooling processes, socialization and the quality of life of these children and their families (4,6,10,11,(13)(14)(15) .…”
