Factors associated with the publication of scholarly articles by pharmacists

Abstract: The most influential factors on the publication efforts by pharmacists were time allotment, collaboration between pharmacy colleagues and within multidisciplinary teams, and training in research methods and scientific writing. Introduction to the publication process during training programs appeared to influence future propensity toward scholarly participation. Review and descriptive articles were the most frequently published types of articles in the pharmacy literature.

“…As a result, approaching the research requirement from the same structured process as many of the other residency components may help increase resident confidence and competence in the research process. Recognizing that this may not be feasible at all institutions, pairing residents with mentors experienced in the research process and motivated to produce high quality research may help achieve similar endpoints as it has with practitioners 11. Additionally, complementing this mentorship with individuals with expertise in targeted areas, such as biostatistics or administrative data queries, may further facilitate movement through the various stages of the research process.…”

“…Publication of pharmacy resident research projects is low and the number of publications does not appear to be increasing despite the rise in residency positions. 2328 There is much that can be learned from the current state of resident research including their publication rate and residency-trained individual’s publication contributions to biomedical journals in the ensuing years after residency completion.…”

“…37 Low submission and publication rate may be a result of poor research design, unoriginal projects, or not completing a research manuscript. 27,28,37 Small study samples often result in insufficient power to detect differences and make meaningful conclusions. Residents often have inadequate time to devote to research and complete a meaningful project within one year.…”
