Objetivo. Verificar evidências científicas do perfil audiológico de crianças com distúrbio primário de linguagem. Método. A busca por artigos científicos foi conduzida por dois pesquisadores independentes nas bases de dados Medline (Pubmed), LILACS, SciELO, Scopus, WEB OF SCIENCE e BIREME sem restrição de idioma, período e localização. Para complementar e evitar viés de risco foi realizada uma busca por literatura cinza no Google Scholar. Resultados. Do grupo de pacientes (1524 crianças), 62,87% apresentaram comprometimento de linguagem primária. Houve associação significante entre comprometimento primário de linguagem e perfil audiológico alterado. Indivíduos com perfil audiológico atípico tiveram 63% mais chance de apresentar comprometimento primário de linguagem quando comparado àqueles com perfil audiológico normal. Conclusão. É imprescindível desenvolver novas pesquisas que versem sobre programas de prevenção e promoção de saúde. Torna-se fundamental alertar e informar pais e responsáveis da importância de se tratar possíveis comprometimentos condutivos, os quais podem aparecer na infância, assim como atentá-los para os sinais de alerta que os filhos podem apresentar e que demonstram dificuldades de desenvolvimento de fala e linguagem.

Introduction: Unaddressed communication disorders are multidimensional, affecting individuals physiologically, psychologically and emotionally. The quality of life of these individuals can be improved with rehabilitative measures, justifying this study. The study therefore aims to assess the impact of rehabilitation on these patients, determine the challenges and proffer possible solutions. Methods: Eighteen months prospective study on audiological and speech disorders among ENT patients in the University of Medical Sciences Teaching Hospital, Ondo State, from April 2021 to September 2022 was carried out. History was taken, general examination and full E.N.T. examinations were done. Those with audiological disorders from canal blockage due to foreign bodies, debris and impacted wax had ear syringing. Others with persistent audiological condition were further evaluated and treated accordingly, with Hearing Aids trial and fitting inclusive. Patients with speech disorder had speech therapy after baseline audiological screening. Data were represented in tables and figures. P value < 0.05 was statistically significant. Results: 930 patients presented at the ENT clinic. 537 (57.74%) females and 393 (42.26%) males. Of this, 405 (43.55%) patients had audiological conditions while 23 (2.47%) had speech disorders. Impacted wax, tinnitus, hearing loss, foreign body in the ear and delayed speech development were commonest. 297 had syringing while 105 patients were further evaluated. 369 of 405 patients were successfully rehabilitated. 3 stroke patients had good speech recovery. Predominant challenges encountered were unavailability of instruments and uncooperativeness of elderly patients. Weekly savings and incorporation of dedicated relatives for home therapy ensures solutions respectively. Conclusion: Rehabilitation in E.N.T., though gradually progressive, is beneficial. The guiding concept is patience.

Citizen care in the health field is a fundamental right provided by the federal constitution of Brazil. The Unified Health System (SUS) is one of the best and most important systems in the world and serves around 220 million people. The System is comprehensive and characterized by three pillars of support: universality, completeness and equity. The right to scientific information is one of the main elements of the SUS and the Journal of Human Growth and Development has contributed over its 27 years of existence providing a democratic scenario and a place to debate ideas in the field of public health and the irrefutable defence of SUS in Brazil. In this way, JHGD maintains its tradition of publishing articles devoted to the field of public health and contributing to the dissemination of knowledge and to the progress of science.
