Factors Associated with Sequelae of Campylobacter and Non-typhoidal Salmonella Infections: A Systematic Review

Abstract: Despite the significant global burden of gastroenteritis and resulting sequelae, there is limited evidence on risk factors for sequelae development. We updated and extended previous systematic reviews by assessing the role of antibiotics, proton pump inhibitors (PPI) and symptom severity in the development of sequelae following campylobacteriosis and salmonellosis. We searched four databases, including PubMed, from 1 January 2011 to 29 April 2016. Observational studies reporting sequelae of reactive arthritis … Show more

“…We found no association between development of MSK symptoms and antibiotic treatment of TD. This accords with research showing that antibiotic treatment of infections caused by Campylobacter , ETEC or non-typhoidal Salmonellae does not prevent postinfectious joint symptoms 32–35. To our knowledge, the present investigation is the first to scrutinise the relation between antibiotic treatment of TD and MSK symptoms among travellers.…”

“…The aetiological agents studied in the articles analysed are similar to the ones found in the literature before the period of study [8,[46][47][48]. However, some aetiological agents such as surgery, chikungunya virus (CHIKV), ZIKV and human papillomavirus vaccine (HPV) stand out as novelties in the list of aetiological agents that trigger the development of GBS [13,30].…”

“…Complications and long-term sequelae after an episode of acute gastroenteritis of infectious aetiology have been described for Campylobacter jejuni , Escherichia coli , most serotypes of Salmonella enterica [6], Yersinia enterocolitica [7], Giardia lamblia [810] and norovirus [11]. Besides considerable accumulated knowledge of the acute phase of cryptosporidiosis, there is growing evidence for the presence of long-term health implications following an acute episode of Cryptosporidium infection.…”
