Factors associated with self‐disclosure of HIV serostatus to significant others

Abstract: Self-disclosure of HIV serostatus rates was highest for partners, followed by friends, and lowest for family members. Patterns of disclosure of HIV serostatus varied in relation to ethnicity. Fifteen years into the HIV epidemic, social stigma continues to contribute towards non-disclosure of diagnosis.

“…Studies on disclosure in both developed countries (Greene et al 2003, Petrak et al 2001, Petronio 2002, Serovich, 2000, Schmidt and Goggin 2002 and developing countries (Almeleh 2004;Chandra et al 2003;Soskolne et al 2003;Kahn 2004) show that the decision to disclose is generally a difficult process. People living with HIV are confronted with many factors that compel, encourage or constrain the decision to disclose their HIV status (Almeleh 2004;Greene et al 2003;Petrak et al 2001;Serovich, 2000;Holt et al 1998).…”

“…Time elapsed since HIV diagnosis of less than four years was strongly associated with HPV infection. Despite this variable having been implicated in HIV serostatus self-disclosure (Petrak et al 2001), it is difficult to determine the steps of this association, since we do not know if HPV was acquired before or after HIV infection. If we consider that HPV infection is a common genital virus among sexually active women, then this virus might have been acquired early in their sexual life and, thus, before HIV infection.…”
