Intimate partner violence (IPV) is a global health problem of epidemic proportions, affecting a third of women across the globe and as many as 60% in heavily affected regions of Africa. There is strong evidence that risk of IPV is heightened in HIV-infected women, and emerging evidence linking experiencing IPV and/or HIV to a higher likelihood of experiencing mental health problems. This triple burden makes women in Africa, living in the epicentre of HIV, all the more vulnerable. In this synthesis, this study reviewed literature pertaining to the overlap of IPV, HIV, and mental health problems. It presents a series of geographical maps illustrating the heavy burden of IPV and HIV globally, and how these coincide with a growing prevalence of mental health problems in Africa. Furthermore, it presents evidence on: the association between IPV and HIV, shared risk factors, and health consequences. This synthesis sheds light on the fact that $30% of women are affected by these three burdens concurrently, and the need for intervention is essential. Promising large scale interventions which have taken place in Africa are described, and evidence is presented in support of integrated versus targeted screening. ARTICLE HISTORY

Recent innovative research has identified key factors that put vulnerable South African women at risk of HIV/AIDS and gender-based violence, including high-risk patterns of alcohol abuse and sexual partnering, gender norms that place men in control in sexual relationships, low educational levels and limited access to employment, poor health care, inadequate housing, and sex work. These studies suggest that targeted HIV-prevention interventions can effect improvement for this vulnerable population when programs remain sensitive to gender and cultural differences and expectations and address the social and economic inequalities that make women vulnerable. Solving these problems on a larger economic scale will require institutional participation and political support for women’s equity, HIV-prevention literacy, and a broader HIV-prevention agenda. This can be accomplished with a multilevel, collaborative response from government, community, and international partners using multiple prevention strategies and fostering sustainability.

Resumen: Antecedentes: Los estudios sobre comportamientos sexoreproductivos de riesgo de la población juvenil aprecian diferencias entre sexos y recomiendan incluir la perspectiva de género. El objetivo de este estudio es conocer cómo influyen los condicionantes de género en las jóvenes y si hay relación con el embarazo no planificado. Método: Participantes: 395 mujeres entre 14 y 24 años, atendidas en consulta de anticoncepción. Instrumento: Aplicación del cuestionario sobre condicionantes de género en anticoncepción (COGANT). Análisis: Relación entre puntuaciones en el cuestionario, variables sociodemográficas y embarazo no planificado. Resultados: Los condicionantes de género actúan más en adolescentes, extranjeras, gitanas y con menor nivel de estudios. Puntuar más elevado en el cuestionario y en los factores "Relación vincular no igualitaria" y "Rol de género tradicional", está relacionado con el embarazo no planificado. Conclusiones: Es necesario avanzar en la igualdad y cuestionar los roles tradicionales para disminuir los embarazos no planificados en las chicas jó-venes. Abstract: Studies about risk sexual-reproductive behaviour in young population show differences between sexes and recommend to include gender perspective. The aim of this study is to know how gender conditionings influence young women and whether there is any relationship with unplanned pregnancy. Method: Participants: 395 women between 14 and 24 years old, attending the contraception consultation. Tool: application of the questionnaire about gender conditionings in contraception (COGANT). Analysis: relationship between scores in the question-naire, socio-demographic variables and unplanned pregnancy. Results: Gender conditionings act more in teenage, foreign and gipsy young women and with a lower level of studies. A higher score in the questionnaire and in both factors, "Inegalitarian relationship" and "Traditional gender role", is related with an unplanned pregnancy. Conclusions: It is necessary to make progress in equality and to question traditional roles to decrease unplanned pregnancies in young girls.

Abstract: IPV was strongly associated with most of the identified HIV risk factors. Our findings provide further evidence of links between IPV and HIV among women and the importance of joint prevention.
