Factors associated with good glycemic control among patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus

Abstract: Aims/IntroductionThe aim of the present study was to determine the status of glycemic control and identify factors associated with good glycemic control among diabetic patients treated at primary health clinics.Materials and MethodsA systematic random sample of 557 patients was selected from seven clinics in the Hulu Langat District. Data were collected from patients' medication records, glycemic control tests and structured questionnaires. Logistic regression analysis was carried out to predict factors associ… Show more

“…Our result is in line with the Swedish study, which also observed deterioration in HbA1c control among the whole Swedish national diabetes register population . The deterioration in HbA1c has been linked with many factors, for instance, ageing, duration of disease and severity of disease . In our study, a subgroup analysis of HbA1c control among same‐aged patients throughout the follow‐up showed no effect of ageing in HbA1c deterioration.…”

“…This finding that older people are more adherent is consistent with other studies that have shown that better hypoglycemic medication adherence is associated with increased age 18,35,36. Furthermore, studies in societies like that in PNG, where the elderly are cared for in homes where extended families reside, have also shown that older people have better glycemic control than their younger counterparts 19,37,38. These results, however, differ from the Scottish study, which found that younger patients had better adherence to their hypoglycemic medications 34.…”

“…It is well established that dietary habits, food choices and physical inactivity profoundly affect blood glucose response and control, and self‐monitoring is a key driver for behavior change. However, therapeutic strategies are often required for optimal glycemic control. Recent availability of real‐time and ambulatory CGM technology provides the opportunity to use this monitoring information to educate patients on blood glucose response to lifestyle choices (diet and exercise), with the objective of modifying choices and augmenting adherence to effective behaviors, in the absence of medication intensification.…”
