Factors associated with fertility of nulliparous dairy heifers following a 10‐day fixed‐time artificial insemination program with sex‐sorted and conventional semen

Abstract: Increased fertility was associated with larger heifers and heifers that expressed oestrus, particularly when sexed-sorted semen was used. Variation in the timing of AI with respect to device removal between 47 and 51.4 h did not adversely affect conception rates.

“…The average empirical conception rate for sex sorted semen was 48.3% (ranging from 41 to 50.4 over various herds). The conception rate of sexed as a percentage of conventional semen ranged from 71.8 to 78.5% in various herds, which were in accordance with the results reported in the literature (Andersson et al 2006;Cerchiaro et al 2007;Chebel et al 2010;Norman et al 2010;Healy et al 2013;Karakaya et al 2014;Noonan et al 2016).…”

“…In a study that compared sexed semen insemination of heifers inseminated 54 h versus 60 h after removal of an intravaginal progesterone-releasing device, the pregnancy per AI was higher in the heifers inseminated 60 h after progesterone removal. 21 Although not statistically significant, Noonan et al also reported a trend for higher pregnancy per AI in sex-sorted inseminations that occurred more than 50 h after removal of the progesterone-releasing device. Although the data gathered in this study offered no insight, it is possible that the unusually early FTAI may have reduced the relative pregnancy per AI achieved by sexed semen.…”

“…22 The preferred synchronisation protocol of the participating farm in our study resulted in the heifers being inseminated 44 h after removal of the intravaginal progesteronereleasing device, 10 h earlier than typically recommended (and 16 h earlier than in the previous research). 21 Body weight significantly affected pregnancy per AI in heifers inseminated with non-sexed semen (P = 0.004). Noonan et al achieved higher pregnancy per AI for both sexed and non-sexed semen compared with our study, as well as a relative pregnancy per AI of sexed semen of 0.72 after inseminating heifers 47-51.4 h after removal of the progesterone-releasing device.…”

“…Inseminacja w rujach synchronizowanych zapewniała niższy wskaźnik zacieleń niż po naturalnych (1). Unasiennianie samic później niż 50 h po usunięciu wkładki CIDR miało -w odniesieniu do wskaźnika zacieleń -przewagę nad wcześniejszą inseminacją (48). Potwierdzają to inne badania, w których jałówki inseminowano 60 h i 54 h po usunięciu wkładki CIDR.…”
