“…Our work has also demonstrated associations between weight and the increased likelihood of developing foot problems [32], arthritis [16] and incontinence [33]. Overweight or 13 of 19 obese women were also more likely to report declining physical functioning [34,35] and linked data showed increased incidence of acute adverse health events, including hospital admissions [30] and stroke [35]. In the entire body of work on weight and health in this cohort of women, the only positive health outcome of high BMI was reduced risk of osteoporosis [28].…”

During such a pivotal time, anxious reactions to spousal loss are common [39], as the loss of one’s spouse often signifies the beginning of feeling socially isolated [32; 97].…”

“…These health indicators have to some extent been reported to be associated with the QOL or domains of the QOL in elderly patients with medical problems (Borowiak & Kostka, 2004;Sibbritt, Byles, & Regan, 2007;Singh et al, 2005;Wu et al, 2000;Yohannes, Roomi, Baldwin, & Connolly, 1998). However, relatively few studies have explored how domains of the QOL are related to health indicators such as medical conditions and functional status in samples of medically hospitalised elderly patients with a wide range of diagnoses and difficulties.…”
