Factors and markers of virulence in from human septicemia

Abstract: One hundred Escherichia coil isolates from human septicemia were characterized ,~,,ith respect to O serogroups 1,2,4, 6,7,8, 15,18, 75 and 78, a-hemolysin, carboxylesterase B typing, cytotoxic necrotizing factor, F163 and CS31A fimbrial antigens, aerobactin production, colicins, and antibiotic sensitivity. A factorial analysis of correspondence and X-" tests indicated that most of E. coli isolates belonging to the studied O serogroups were positive for the virulence factors or markers a-haemolysin, carboxyles… Show more

“…For virulence traits, we have limited our investigation to haemolysin and CNF1 production. These characteristics have already been associated with invasive E. coli [23,24]. In our study 24/26 invasive isolates were Hly and 18/26 were CNF1 positive.…”

“…I. and F. Orskov according to standard techniques [15]. For a few strains, O serogroups 8, 17 and 78 were determined using an immunodot technique and also by comparison of the SDS-PAGE LPS patterns with reference O antigens as previously described [9]. SDS-PAGE analysis of OMPs was carried out on Triton X-100 insoluble membrane preparations using a 10% polyacrylamide gel [16].…”

“…A variant of CS31A was isolated from a bovine E. coli strain in the USA [8]. CS31A was also identified on E. coli strains from human septicaemia [9]. A CF 29K protein closely related to CS31A was described recently in Klebsiella strains from nosocomial infections [10].…”
