Purpose This study aims to investigate how artificial intelligence (AI)-powered smart home devices affect young consumers' requirements for convenience, support, security and monitoring, as well as their ability to advance environmental sustainability. This study also examines the variables that impact users' motivation to use AI-powered smart home devices, such as perceived value, ease of use, social presence, identity, technology security and the moderating impact of trust. Design/methodology/approach The responses from residents of Sarawak, Malaysia, were collected through online questionnaires. This study aimed to examine the perceptions of millennials and zillennials towards their trust and adoption of AI-powered devices. This study used a quantitative approach, and the relationships among the study constructs were analysed using partial least squares - structural equation modelling. Findings The present study found that perceived usefulness, ease of use and social presence were the main motivators among actual and potential users of smart home devices, especially in determining their intentions to use and actual usage. Additionally, there was a moderating effect of trust on the relationship between perceived ease of use, social presence, social identity and intention to use AI-powered devices in smart homes. Originality/value To the best of the authors’ knowledge, this is one of the first studies to examine the factors influencing smart technology adoption. This study provided meaningful insights on the development of strategies for the key stakeholders to enhance the adoption and usage of AI-powered smart home devices in Sarawak, one of the promising Borneo states. Additionally, this study contributed to the growing body of knowledge on the associations between technology acceptance model dimensions, intention and actual usage of smart technology, with the moderating impact of trust.

The Internet of Things (IoT) is one of the promising technologies in industry 4.0, which has the potential to provide a myriad of advantages and offer convenience to individuals' daily lives and efficiency to businesses. Due to the enormous potential of the Internet of things, attention towards its adoption is increasing significantly. Despite the undeniable relevance of this field, the current study aims to synthesize the body of knowledge on IoT adoption using systematic literature review (SPAR‐4‐SLR) with the TCCM framework. A total of 101 articles were carefully selected after a thorough search in the Web of Science and Scopus databases. This study has performed an in‐depth descriptive analysis to present the current state of knowledge. The findings of this study revealed that the Technology acceptance model and Unified theory of acceptance and use of technology were the most widely employed theories and models in previous literature. Furthermore, this study has developed an integrative conceptual framework including antecedents, mediators, moderators, and outcomes. Also, the antecedents are classified into four categories based on the Technology‐organization‐environment framework with end user‐specific category. By integrating the existing knowledge, the study identifies significant gaps and offers a fertile ground for further investigation in this field.

Recently, the adoption of smart home technology has been on the rise and becoming a trend for home residents. The development of Internet-of-Things (IoT) technology drives the smart home authentication system with biometric systems such as facial recognition, fingerprint, and voice control techniques. In the context of homeowners, security is always the primary concern. However, conventional home security and the existing smart home security system have some limitations. These techniques use single-factor authentication, which provides limited protection for home security. Therefore, this project proposed a design for smart home multi-factor authentication using facial recognition and a one-time password sent to smartphones for a home security system. Rapid application development was the methodology for conducting this study. A usability evaluation suggested that the proposed smart home multi-factor authentication is acceptable, but some usability issues can be improved in the future.
