Factors affecting the use of wiki to manage knowledge in a small company

Abstract: This paper intends to present and discuss the findings of a case study analysis of the adoption and use of a wiki system by a small enterprise that is intended as a tool for managing the knowledge needed to successfully perform its business activities. The study aims at contributing to the still insufficient research on the factors influencing the use of new Web 2.0 technologies in small organisations to support internal knowledge management

“…To accelerate the development of common meaning, the consultants continued to engage managers in interactive activities with the support of low-cost technologies, such as Internet platforms (Bolisani and Scarso 2016;Wee and Chua 2013), to refine their interpretations of newly proposed improvement practices with simple and accessible language: for example, the use of plain language including big tag and white boards to interpret key activities of visual management practice. Moreover, they actively negotiated their roles with the owner and senior managers to clarify the scope of their consulting tasks and encourage managers to contribute to the design of implementation guidelines.…”

“…Particularly in Chinese SMEs where the centralisation of decision-making is reinforced by traditional Chinese "command and control" culture (Cunningham 2010;Redding 1993;Whitley 1992). Hence, the ongoing support and commitment from top management is the most critical factor for effective KM in SMEs since this ensures the initiation and sustainability of KM effort (Bolisani and Scarso 2016;Bozbura 2007). However, since the owner and senior managers in SMEs focus more on operational details of their daily business, KM is often considered as being more tactical rather than strategic (Beijerse 2000;Cantú et al 2009;Corso 2003;Salojarvi et al 2005 (Corso 2003;Desouza and Awazu 2006).…”

“…A prime example of a successful wiki is Wikipedia, which has taken over the business of ready references, replacing big names like The Encyclopedia Britannica and World Book (Rothman, 2016). Wikis are a valuable business tool, permitting collaboration and creation of works on the job (Bolisani & Scarso, 2016;Grace, 2009;Ojala, 2008). In the learning field, studies have shown their successful inclusion in face-to-face classes (Hubble, 2011;Roussinos & Jimoyiannis, 2013).…”

“…In the knowledge management process model, the external and internal factors which influence knowledge potential and are regarded as controversial by researchers, are evaluated. The analysis of external and internal factors that influence knowledge potential faces a variety of approaches (Bivainis & Morkvenas, 2012;Fink, 2011) and methods (Bivainis & Morkvenas 2012;Chen et al, 2009;Fink, 2011;Hu et al, 2015;Jang et al, 2014;Ragab & Arisha, 2013), and a range of factor assessment approaches (Bolisani & Scarso, 2016;Chang, Hsu, & Yen, 2012;Chen et al, 2011;Gharehbiglo et al, 2012;Huang et al, 2011;Hunitie, 2017;Koohang et al, 2017;Lee & Wong, 2015;Lin, 2014;Tubigi & Alshawi, 2015).
