BackgroundComplementary and alternative medicine (CAM) may offer benefits as well as risks to people with cardiovascular disease. Understanding the prevalence and the nature of CAM use will encourage beneficial CAM therapies, prevent potential herb-drug interactions and foster communication between patients and physicians.MethodsA systematic search of eight bibliographic databases was conducted for studies that investigated CAM use in patients with cardiovascular diseases. Two independent reviewers selected relevant abstracts and evaluated the quality of included studies.ResultsTwenty-seven studies were included. Prevalence of CAM use in cardiac patients ranged from 4% - 61%. Biologically-based therapies usage ranged from 22% to 68%. Herbal medicines were used by between 2% and 46%. A large proportion of patients did not inform medical practitioners about their CAM use and up to 90% of treating physicians did not discuss CAM use with their patients.ConclusionsCAM use in patients with cardiovascular disease appears common. The findings suggest that the effects of CAM on medical management of cardiovascular disease may be overlooked and that patient-physician communication need to be strengthened.

RESUMo objetivo: Verificar a frequência de uso de suplementos alimentares e fatores associados numa amostra de idosos cadastrados nos Centros de referência em assistência Social (CraS) de Porto alegre -rio Grande do Sul, Brasil. Métodos: a coleta de dados foi realizada por meio de entrevista com 86 idosos cadastrados nos CraS e com uso de questionário padronizado contendo informações demográficas, socioeconômicas, dados de saúde e de uso de suplementos alimentares, além da aferição das medidas antropométricas de peso (kg), altura (m) e circunferência abdominal (cm) e posterior classificação do Índice de Massa Corporal e risco cardiovascular. Resultados: a média de idade foi de 72 anos, mais da metade dos idosos consideravam seu estado de saúde regular, julgavam a qualidade da alimentação como boa e praticavam atividade física, 10,5% eram fumantes e 91,9% apresentavam doenças crônicas. a frequência de uso de suplementos alimentares foi de 50,0% e o produto mais utilizado foi o Carbonato de Cálcio. a maior parte dos suplementos foi prescrita por médicos, comprada em farmácias e a principal fonte de informação citada foi a televisão. Conclusão: Concluímos que existe um elevado consumo de suplementos alimentares por idosos, e que a principal fonte de informação sobre os produtos alimentares é a televisão. Sendo assim há necessidade de melhorias na comunicação entre profissionais de saúde e idosos, oferecendo informações adequadas sobre os suplementos alimentares e diminuindo riscos à saúde dos idosos.Palavras-chave: Idoso; Suplementos nutricionais; Estado nutricional. ABSTRACTAims: Verify the frequency of use of food supplements and associated factors in elderly population registered in Social Work reference Centers (CraS) in Porto alegre -rio Grande do Sul, Brazil. Methods: Data collection was conducted through interviews with 86 elderly registered in CraS and use of standardized questionnaire containing demographic, socioeconomic, health and dietary supplements information, besides the anthropometric measurements of weight (kg). height (m), waist circumference (cm) and subsequent classification of the Body Mass Index and cardiovascular risk. Results: The average age was 72 years, more than half of seniors considered their health as regular, judged the quality of the diet as good and practiced physical activity, 10,5% were smokers and 91,9% had chronic diseases. The prevalence of use of dietary supplements was 50,0% and the most widely used product is the Calcium Carbonate. Most supplements were prescribed by doctors, bought in pharmacies and the television was the main source of information cited. Conclusion: We conclude there is a high consumption of dietary supplements by the elderly, and that the main source of information on food products is the television. Thus, there a need for improvement in communication between health professionals and elderly, providing adequate information on dietary supplements and reducing risks to the health of the elderly.
