Factors Affecting the Quality of Bowel Preparation Before Colonoscopy in Outpatient: A Prospective Observational Study

Abstract: Colonoscopy is an effective method for screening colorectal cancer and adenoma, but the adenoma detection rate depends on the quality of bowel preparation. Our study investigates the influencing factors of the quality of bowel preparation before colonoscopy in outpatients and the influence of the number of walking steps on the quality of bowel preparation. We prospectively collected the clinical data of 150 outpatients undergoing colonoscopy in our department in 2019. Ordinal logistic regression shows that the… Show more

“…[ 19 ] A prospective observational study of 150 Chinese outpatients undergoing colonoscopies identified 5,270 steps as the minimum requirement for achieving high-quality bowel cleansing. [ 27 ] Similarly, Gao et al . (2023)[ 28 ] conducted a randomized controlled trial (RCT) involving 300 Chinese patients undergoing colonoscopies and found that the rate of adequate bowel preparation in the 10,000-step group was significantly higher than that in the 0-step and 5,000-step groups ( P < 0.001).…”

“…Additionally, a survey of 240 older Chinese adults showed that walking for less than 30 minutes during preparation was a strong predictor of inadequate bowel preparation (OR = 2.47, p = .008) (Zhang et al, 2018). Shi, Wang, Ying, Fu, and Li (2023) prospectively collected clinical data from 150 outpatients undergoing colonoscopy in a Chinese hospital and found that the number of walking steps before colonoscopy was an independent factor affecting the quality of bowel preparation ( β = .018, p = .004). In addition, there was a curved relationship between bowel cleanliness score and the number of walking steps, with a minimum of 5,270 walking steps required for a high-quality bowel preparation prior to colonoscopy.…”
