Factors affecting the development of precipitating antibodies in workers exposed to contaminated humidifiers

Abstract: A total of 601 sera from groups of workers exposed to heavily and moderately contaminated humidifiers respectively were examined by the double diffusion test for precipitating antibodies to humidifier extracts. Clinical information was obtained using a standardized questionnaire. Skin-prick tests to control, to three common inhalant antigens and to an extract from the humidifier were performed in 103 subjects exposed to a heavily contaminated humidifier. In this environment a strong inverse relationship betwee… Show more

“…Relationships of exposure to viable moulds and to total dust with IgG anti body levels have been shown in wood trimmers [13] and in pig farmers [26], respectively. Relationships of the anti body level with the assumed exposure intensity have been shown in pigeon breeders [27], in workers exposed to con taminated humidifiers [4,5], and in farmers [28]. Our study is in agreement with these studies and indicates ex posure levels of R. microsporus and R variotii spores that may cause development of antibodies.…”

“…The antigens can be found in the work ing environments of these patients, such as farms [1,2] and sawmills [3], and working environments with contami nated humidifiers [4,5]. Exposure may also occur in lei sure time due to activities such as pigeon breeding [6,7].…”

“…It also seemed in the present study that there was a higher proportion of nonsmokers in the group of farmers with toxic febrile reactions than among reference farmers. Similar findings in humidi fier fever have been interpreted as evidence of the role of properly functioning alveolar macrophages in the precipitin response observed in this disease [7],…”

“…It might be related to the previously described suppression of alveolar macrophage function in smokers (28) and the weakened role of such macrophages as carriers of antigen to the local lymph nodes (29). A correlation between impaired antibody response and smoking has also been described in patients with the humidifier fever syndrome (30).…”
