A filter-paper technique that can be used to measure the matric potential of field soil is described in detail. When a calibrated batch of filter papers is used, the precision is limited by the variability between individual papers and the limitation of weighing to the nearest mg. The absolute accuracy is also limited by the instruments used for calibration. There was reasonable agreement between batches of the same type of paper, suggesting that our generalized calibration curves can be used for Whatman No. 42 filter papers where accuracy is not paramount.For potentials 2 -2.5 MPa, papers need to be equilibrated with the soil for 6 d. To achieve the same accuracy at lower potentials longer equilibration periods are required. Results suggest that the technique should be effective down to at least -100 MPa if soils are allowed to equilibrate fully with the papers. Coefficients of determination (r2) for the calibration lines were all 20.92. A regression of log( -matric potential) measured by the filter paper technique against measurements made using tensiometers and a psychrometer over a range of potentials between -1 kPa and -10 MPa gave an r2 value of 0.995.

high cost and long time required to determine a retention curve by the conventional methods of the richards Chamber and haines Funnel limit its use; therefore, alternative methods to facilitate this routine are needed. The filter paper method to determine the soil water retention curve was evaluated and compared to the conventional method. undisturbed samples were collected from five different soils. Using a Haines Funnel and Richards Chamber, moisture content was obtained for tensions of 2; 4; 6; 8; 10; 33; 100; 300; 700; and 1,500 kPa. in the filter paper test, the soil matric potential was obtained from the filter-paper calibration equation, and the moisture subsequently determined based on the gravimetric difference. The van Genuchten model was fitted to the observed data of soil matric potential versus moisture. Moisture values of the conventional and the filter paper methods, estimated by the van Genuchten model, were compared. The filter paper method, with R² of 0.99, can be used to determine water retention curves of agricultural soils as an alternative to the conventional method.

The paper describes the filter-paper method as an indirect method for the estimation of the pF characteristics. In this method, no direct measurements of soil water potential (pF) are performed, but the latter is determined on the basis of the gravimetric moisture content of the filter paper, which is in contact with the analysed soil samples. Therefore, there is a need to establish a calibration equation that would express the relationship between the value of the soil water potential (pF) and the gravimetric moisture content of the filter paper. The calibration procedure was performed using standard measurement methods of determining pF curves (sand box, pressure plates) and filter paper (Whatman no 42). Based on the research conducted, calibration curves were developed for the filter-paper method, for the analysed sapric (drainic) histosoles, developed from moss and alder peats of medium (hemic) and strong (sapric) degree of decomposition, originating from the mid-basin of the Biebrza river. The proposed calibration curves were presented as 3-degree polynomial equations. The aforementioned equations can be used for the estimation of retention characteristic for sapric (drainic) histosoles, showing similar properties and comparable degree of secondary decomposition of the peat mass.
