“…In this study, general surgery and internal medicine were found to be the most favorable career choices while anesthesiology and urology were reported as the least favorable. Our findings are similar to studies conducted in Jordan [ 1 ], Pakistan [ 15 ], Ethiopia [ 16 ], and Saudi Arabia [ 12 , 17 ], which also found that the majority of the students have selected surgery followed by internal medicine as their future career. Although pathology was ranked as the sixth highest specialty, only 5% of the medical students indicated that they would make pathology their first choice.…”

Numerous studies have also reported that males traditionally choose surgery [ 1 , 15 - 16 , 20 ]. In contrast, our findings show that there is no significant difference between males and females in terms of their preference for general surgery.…”

“…We believe that these factors can be utilized by mentors and the medical workforce in encouraging students to choose specialties that are inadequately represented and thus better serving the immediate community. For example, better incorporation of surgery into the curriculum, proper attention given to students during their surgical rotation and restructuring of the surgical training program are some of the ways that may improve the interest of students in the field of surgery (Zaheer, Rehman, Fareed, Khan, & Rizvi, 2018). This data will be followed with a longitudinal study in order to understand the dynamic influence that educational institutions, work environments, lifestyle etc.…”
