Factors affecting the bundled adoption of irrigation and nutrient best management practices for improving water quality and quantity in Florida

Abstract: This study focuses on clustering irrigation and nutrient best management practices (BMPs) that help to improve water quality and quantity using a multiple indicator multiple causation model. Data from a survey of Florida growers' irrigation and nutrient practices are used to identify bundles that growers adopt using a cluster analysis. Identified bundles are regressed on grower and farm characteristics. Growers with a college degree or more, income greater than $100,000, greater farm experience, larger operati… Show more

“…Other BMPs were not chosen in this study as they represent only a small fraction of total conservation and some practices, such as contour farming, grassed waterway, lined waterway, diversion structures, and alike, were not applicable to working lands with row crops. We also overlooked the possibility of joint adoption to simplify our analysis because of the non-universality of BMP bundles due to spatial heterogeneity (Soh et al, 2023). Furthermore, as each conservation practice is tracked individually toward completion, information on the extent and order of BMP co-adoption are not readily available.…”
