“…Jenkinson and Rayner (1977) developed a soil organic matter model based on ryegrass decomposition from which they found that annual additions of 1 Mg/ha of organic carbon, or a little over 2 Mg/ha of ryegrass, would resuk in a steady state organic carbon content of 0.94%, or 24.26 Mg/ha in the upper 23 cm of soil. Using their model I calculated the increase in in continuous corn and in a 5-yr corn-oats-wheat-clover-timothy rotation (Salter and Green 1933). The curve for SOM in the 5-yr rotation is based on the assumption of an ultimate SOM content 39% less than the uncultivated amount, which is the average SOM loss in the uppermost 15 cm of 107 cultivated Udalfs (Mann 1986).…”
