Factors Affecting Students' Attitudes toward Computer Programming

Abstract: The aim of this study was to investigate the factors affecting the pre-service computer science teachers' attitudes towards computer programming (ATCP). The sample consists of 119 preservice teachers at a public state university. The influences of students' demographic characteristics (gender, grade level, and high school type), their achievement in computer programming courses, perceived learning, and computer programming self-efficacy on their ATCP were tested using multiple linear regression. Descriptive, c… Show more

“…Other aspects of the role of self-efficacy have been explored by Gurer et al [42], who investigated pre-service computer science teachers' Attitudes Towards Computer Programming (ATCP). The constructed regression model indicated that achievement in computer programming courses, computer programming self-efficacy, and perceived learning were significant predictors of ATCP.…”

“…Son olarak, öğrencilerin bilişsel boyuttaki tutumlarının orta düzeyde çıkmasının sebepleri ve öğrencileri programlama Introduction Literature has indicated that psychological factors such as negative perception, motivation and especially low attitudes are the factors that negatively affect programming achievement. Research on computer programming also emphasizes the positive relationship between programming attitude and success (Gurer, Cetin, and Top, 2019;Lee, Kim and Lee, 2017). Therefore, the attitude towards programming that affects programming skills and success needs to be further investigated.…”

“…Özyurt and Özyurt (2015) and Stoilescu and Egodawatte (2010) reported that males' attitudes towards programming are more positive than females. Despite the studies reporting these results, gender differences in computer programming has decreased (Alsadoon, 2013;Gurer et al, 2019).…”

“…Computer programming education is considered as an essential way of developing computational skills (Tsai, Wang & Hsu, 2019). Research showed that there is a strong relationship between self-efficacy and student achievement in computational thinking (CT) activities, including programming (Gurer, Cetin & Top, 2019;Haslaman & Aşkar, 2007;Hawlitschek, Koppen, Dietrich, & Zug, 2019;Korkmaz, Kılıç, Çakır & Erdoğmuş;Mazman Akar & Altun, 2017). Students' self-efficacy in programming can provide valuable information about students' CT skills as well as the effectiveness of instructional practices.…”
