Factors Affecting Sperm Quality Before and After Mating of Calopterygid Damselflies

Abstract: Damselflies (Odonata: Zygoptera) have a more complex sperm transfer system than other internally ejaculating insects. Males translocate sperm from the internal reproductive organs to the specific sperm vesicles, a small cavity on the body surface, and then transfer them into the female. To examine how the additional steps of sperm transfer contribute to decreases in sperm quality, we assessed sperm viability (the proportion of live sperm) at each stage of mating and after different storage times in male and fe… Show more

“…A possible explanation for the beneficial effects of EPI on the mitochondrial metabolism may be provided by nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy studies suggesting a high affinity of catechins for the membranous structures of spermatozoa, particularly mitochondria [46]. Consequently, proper maintenance of the mitochondrial activity, with simultaneous prevention of ROS overproduction may result in a cell that is better suited to withstand a variety of internal or external assaults [47].…”

“…It is usually unclear why females develop exaggerated morphologies in spermstorage organs that make sperm manipulation difficult for males. Polyandry with restricted sperm displacement may be an adaptive strategy for obtaining fresh young sperm (e.g., Lodesani et al 2004;Tsuchiya and Hayashi 2010), while minimizing the risk of an infertile mating or mating with insufficient sperm supply (Wedell et al 2000;García-González 2004;South and Lewis 2011). For female E. plebeja, infertile matings seldom occur (Kamimura 2003b).…”
