Factors Affecting Horizontal Well Gravel-Pack Efficiency

Abstract: Four major factors affecting horizontal well gravel pack were studied using a 3-D simulator developed for horizontal well gravel packing. The factors include settling effect, gravel concentration, injection rate, and carrier fluid viscosity. The gravel pack process was simulated and the effectiveness and pack efficiency of the gravel pack job is determined using the simulator. The effect of carrier fluid viscosity on gravel-pack efficiency was studied by varying the viscosity between 1 and 51 cp, injection rat… Show more

“…Chen [15] compared three critical velocities according to the research results of Penberthy [16,17], and obtained the height range of α wave during gravel packing process. Osisanya et al [18] studied the sensitivity factors of gravel packing in the horizontal well and proposed a method for selecting parameters such as the diameter of wash pipe, solid concentration, the viscosity of sand-carrying fluid, and the flow rate of sand-carrying fluid. Based on the finite volume method, Nguyen et al [19] described the flow process of solid-liquid two-phase flow in the axial and radial direction by using three-dimensional numerical simulation.…”
