FACTORS AFFECTING GROWTH OF STAPHYLOCOCCUS AUREUS L FORMS ON SEMIDEFINED MEDIUM

Abstract: A semidefined agar medium was found suitable for production and cultivation of the L form of Staphylococcus aureuis. In semidefined liquid medium, growth of the L form took place in the form of a sediment containing large masses of cells, but heavy and diffuse growth occurred in the same medium with 0.05% agar. The optimal pH for L-colony formation on solid medium was 6.5. More L colonies developed on 0.75% agar than at higher agar concentrations. L colonies developed in greater numbers on pour plates than on … Show more

“…Growth of Listeria L forms in liquid media as clumps and discrete colonies covering the agar block inoculum has also been reported by Brem and Eveland (3). Similar growth has been reported for other bacterial L forms (2,4,7). Madoff and Dienes (Bacteriol.…”

“…One hypothesis is that reflux may be affecting the mucosal environment and changing the composition of the laryngeal microbiome. However, Staphylococcus aureus does not grow well at pH environments less than 5.5, 16 making a link between reflux and MSSA/MRSA laryngitis less likely. Additionally, comparing the laryngeal microbiome of patients with and without reflux demonstrated no change in microbial diversity or composition.…”

“…A semidefined broth medium was compounded by Abrams (1), and a completely synthetic broth was described by Medill and O'Kane (14) for the Proteus L forms. In addition, a Staphylococcus aureus L form (5) and the 3B type L form of Bacillus subtilis (15) have been cultured on semidefined and defined media, respectively. The B. subtilis L form required an agar support.…”
