Factors affecting fuel rate in Corex process

Abstract: The Corex process has been developed as an alternative to the blast furnace where 80-85% noncoking coal and 15-20% coke is used as fuel for heat generation, production of reduction gases and to maintain adequate char bed permeability in the melter-gasifier. “…The major parameters affecting the fuel rate in Corex process are moisture in the coal blend, volatile matter (VM) in the coal blend, coal char strength after reaction (CSR), 2 coal fines, metallisation, alumina in slag, production and slag rate, etc. 2 The lower the CSR of the coal, the greater the coal fines generation and also the earlier the consumption of carbon in coal (compared to coke) in the gasifier, hence the chances of the fines and the residual ash getting entrapped by slag downpour will be increased. Low CSR coals demand high coke for a stable performance of the furnace.…”
