Factors affecting birth weight of Holstein-Friesian calves in Western Nigeria

Abstract: The birth weight of Friesian and Holstein calves in Western Nigeria was generally lower than that recorded in other tropical countries. This was attributed to a low plane of nutrition during pregnancy and a consequent reduction in length of gestation of the dams. On average, pure-bred Friesian, pure-bred Holstein and Holstein x Friesian calves weighed 29-1, 30-8 and 30-7 kg respectively at birth. Male and female Friesian, Holstein and cross-bred calves averagely weighed 29-9 and 28-2 kg, 29-9 and 31-7 kg, and … Show more

“…It was expected that calf birth weights increase with increased parity due to less competitive demand on nutrients between calf and dam. This finding differed with the results of Adeneye et al (1977) that Friesian dams with three or more parities and Holstein dams that were 3 years old and above produced calves that were significantly (P < 0. 01) heavier at birth than calves of younger dams.…”

“…The second to fourth dry periods were slightly shorter than the first, probably being a reflexion of the better adaptation and increasing maturity of cows than heifer dams. The dry periods 5-8 were probably adversely affected by senescence and by management practices at Iwo Road Dairy Farm (Adeneye & Bamiduro, 1977).…”

“…Maximum milk yield also into Western Nigeria in 1961. Details of animal varies from the second to the fourth lactation while management and data collection were the same as the average 305-day yield is less than 3000 kg reported in two previous papers (Adeneye et al (Mclntyre, 1971;Trail & Marples, 1968;Ragab & 1977;Adeneye & Bamiduro, 1977).
