Factor structure, validity, and reliability of a Persian version of the Body and Appearance Self-conscious Emotions Scale

Abstract: This study examined the psychometric properties of a Persian translation of the Body and Appearance Self-conscious Emotions Scale. A total of 393 university students from Iran completed the Body and Appearance Self-conscious Emotions Scale, along with measures of depression, self-esteem, affect, body appreciation, physical self-perceptions, personality, obsessive-compulsive disorder, and body dysmorphic disorder. Confirmatory factor analysis indicated that the four-factor structure had adequate fit. Further an… Show more

“…Third, unmeasured cultural variables might have confounded current findings. For example, Iran has a collectivistic culture that reinforces conformity (Zemestani et al, 2019), which could have affected treatment adherence and survey item responses. Consequently, it is possible the positive treatment response and low variability were partly a product of culturally specific behavior and not entirely attributable to the interventions per se.…”

“…Taking into account previous studies which reported a similar factor structure and adequate psychometric properties (e.g. Castonguay et al, 2014; Chiminazzo et al, 2019; Razmus et al, 2018; Zemestani et al, 2019), we predicted that BASES measurement invariance across Poland and Canada will be demonstrated. Regarding comparison of body and appearance self-conscious emotions between Canadian and Polish samples, we decided not to formulate a hypothesis on possible differences for two reasons.…”

“…Body-related self-conscious emotions regulate individual’s thoughts and feelings and motivate behaviors; that is why they have important well-being and health-related implications. For instance, body shame is associated with depression (Brunet et al, 2019) or negative affect (Chiminazzo et al, 2019), whereas guilt is related to obsessive–compulsiveness and body dysmorphic disorder (Zemestani et al, 2019) and may increase susceptibility to eating disorders (Calogero and Pina, 2011). On the other hand, body-related guilt may serve as a motivator of reparative activities, such as exercising to burn calories after eating too much (Sabiston et al, 2010).…”

“…Unlike other body image related constructs such as body dissatisfaction and weight valuations which are cognitive constructs and the consequence of reflective processes, body‐related self‐conscious emotions are the result of both reflective (i.e., self‐awareness) and automatic (i.e., affective) processes (Tracy & Robins, 2004). As such, body‐related self‐conscious emotions are moderately correlated with both body‐related cognitions such as body shape perceptions and basic affective constructs such as positive and negative affect (Castonguay et al, 2014; Zemestani et al, 2019).…”
