Factor structure of the Psychopathic Personality Inventory (PPI): Findings from a large incarcerated sample.

Abstract: Benning et al. 2-factor solution using a large (N ϭ 1,224) incarcerated male sample. Confirmatory factor analysis of this model resulted in poor model fit. Similarly, using the same EFA procedures as did S. D. Benning et al., the authors found little evidence for a 2-factor model. When they followed the recommendations of J.-W. van Prooijen and W. A. van der Kloot (2001) for recovering EFA solutions, model fit results provided some evidence that a 3-factor EFA solution could be recovered via confirmatory facto… Show more

“…The results can be readily summarized. First, we were unable to find evidence for the two-factor structure of the PPI-R as proposed by Lilienfeld and Widows (2005) has been found for the original PPI-structure when using exploratory factor analyses either (Neumann et al, 2008). Second, evidence in favour of the idea that the current instrument needs improvement is accumulating, taking into account previous PPI findings.…”

“…The original factor structure of Benning and colleagues (2003) only accounts for 30% to 45% of the variance of the PPI (Eisenbarth & Alpers, 2007;Martin et al, 2008), and the PPI-subscales exhibit cross-loadings on the PPI-factors (Neumann et al, 2008). It may well be that an alternative structure will result in a better model fit (see Maesschalck, Vertommen, & Hooghe, 2002;Neumann et al, 2008). Further research is warranted to explore the PPI-R structure at item level and to fine tune the PPI-R structure using exploratory analyses.…”

“…Since then, there have been multiple revisions of the instrument and more than a thousand published articles supporting its reliability and validity in numerous parts of the world. 11,[20][21][22][23] The PCL-R is a forensic instrument consisting of 20 items. To be scored, these items require data obtained through a semi-structured interview and additional collateral information obtained from institutional files and records, as well as from persons closely related to the subject.…”

“…In further support of directionality, confidence for one's close loved ones is retained when state psychopathy is elevated, whilst that confidence is sacrificed for deviant threatening others. Elevations in psychopathy also seem to prevent the anxiety inherent in preoccupation from rising [49,50]. This does seem to imply adaptive bolstering of attachment-based thinking, for human beings facing survival threats.…”
