Factor Structure of the Geriatric Depression Scale and Relationships with Cognition and Function in Alzheimer’s Disease

Abstract: Background/Aims: No study to date has systematically explored whether the Geriatric Depression Scale (GDS) measures symptoms of apathy and dysphoria in patients with Alzheimer’s disease (AD) or related these constructs to cognitive and functional status. Methods: Exploratory factor analysis (EFA) was used to identify factors of the GDS in a sample of 569 patients with probable AD. Two-way ANOVAs were used to determine the relationship of apathy and dysphoria to neuropsychological and functional measures. Resul… Show more

“…Robot-assisted cognitive training showed increased cognitive capabilities for people with limited social capabilities, such as children with ASD (Huijnen et al, 2016 ; Esteban et al, 2017 ; Marino et al, 2019 ) and people with dementia (Sung et al, 2015 ; Yu et al, 2015 ; Otaki and Otake, 2017 ). Due to cognitive impairment, individuals with dementia may also show deficits in social functioning, such as social withdrawal (Havins et al, 2012 ; Dickerson, 2015 ). In the pilot study by Sung et al ( 2015 ) about robot-assisted therapy using socially assistive pet robot (PARO), institutionalized older adults showed significantly increased communication and interaction skills and activity participation after receiving 4-week robot-assisted therapy.…”

“…Apart from memory deficits, the severity of AD is also associated with impairment of exploratory behaviors, especially showing a loss of curiosity into novel surroundings or environment ( Havins et al, 2012 ). In agreement with this view, isolated aged APP/PS1 mice showed low exploratory activity in the open field test compared with their group controls.…”

“…Apathy is commonly rated as a severe and frequent behavior on the NPI for individuals with AD [31] and strongly correlated to cognitive ability [32]. Elevated apathy at baseline has also been associated with decreasing functional status across the AD spectrum from normal controls to mild AD [33].…”
