Factor Structure of Self‐Reported Clinical Disorders and Personality Disorders: A Review of the Existing Literature and a Factor Analytical Study

Abstract: An adaptation to the current DSM-IV borderline personality criteria should be made, while various findings show that the borderline construct is multidimensional. Second, deletion of the dependent and narcissistic personality in the DSM-V might be unjust. Third, Axis I psychopathology can be explained by the factor neuroticism, and Axis II disorders should be further subdivided into the higher order factors of internalizing and externalizing pathology.

“…In psychometric analyses, DSM-IV criteria for AVPD have been reported to represent a unidimensional construct. 36 , 37 Based on data from a psychiatric outpatient sample, Hummelen et al 36 concluded that the criteria had good psychometric properties and acceptable internal consistency. AVPD showed associations with schizoid, dependent, and paranoid PDs, but it was more likely than the other disorders to be a sole PD diagnosis.…”

“…In the current study, we aimed at adding to the understanding of personality dysfunctioning, by studying the relationships among sex, attachment, autonomy‐connectedness and aspects of personality dysfunctioning as conceptualized by Kernberg (). Previous studies found significant relationships of these variables with DSM‐IV personality disorder characteristics as well as with Big Five personality dimensions (for instance, Bachrach, Croon & Bekker, , , van Assen & Bekker, ; Bakker, Van Oudenhoven, & Van der Zee, ). Our focus on aspects of personality dysfunctioning is in line with the current suggestions of the APA () to take personality functioning aspects into account, next to personality disorder and the five broad areas of pathological personality traits in the study of personality pathology.…”

“…Previous research in which this framework was tested indeed found significant associations among sex, attachment and autonomy-connectedness with DSM-IV personality characteristics and their higher-order factors, internalizing and externalizing (for instance, Bachrach, Bekker & Croon, 2012a;. In the current study, we elaborated on these studies and aimed at examining the relationships of these same variables with dimensions of pathological personality functioning as conceptualized by Kernberg (1984).…”

“…In identifying determinants of sex differences in the prevalence of mental disorders the literature often used the broader categories of internalizing and externalizing mental disorders (e.g., see [ 10 , 43 , 50 , 51 ]. Anxiety-, mood-, and eating disorders are typically internalizing disorders, characterized by self-blame, insecurity, self-silencing and inhibition of other-directed anger.…”
