Factor Market Distortions Across Time, Space and Sectors in China

Abstract: In this paper we measure the distortions in the allocation of labor and capital across provinces and sectors in China for the period 1985-2007. Most existing studies have measured factor market distortions by using some index of dispersion in individual factor returns. However, the map between these dispersion measures and the efficiency loss due to distortions is not clear, especially when there is more than one factor. In this paper, we follow Hsieh and Klenow (2009)'s strategy by measuring the factor market… Show more

“…Studies have also shown that several government interventions in Chinese factor markets have slowed down the progress of market reforms (Jovanovic, 2014). Although price distortion and the resource misallocation of production factors, such as capital, labor and energy, could reduce total factor productivity and lead to lower output, they have become the main approaches of local governments in regional competition (Hsieh and Klenow, 2009;Aoki, 2012;Brandt et al, 2013;Restuccia and Rogerson, 2013). However, no study has yet investigated the role of construction land, which is also an important production factor in China.…”

“…Decomposing aggregate TFP growth in Singapore for the period 1965-2002, Akkemik (2005 shows that resource reallocations account for a large portion of this improvement in aggregate TFP growth. China's fast economic development has also attracted emerging studies to discuss its own industrial transformation, but these studies reach inconsistent results by using different estimating techniques on various periods, such as those of Wang and Szirmai (2008), Chen, Jefferson, andZhang (2011), andBrandt, Tombe, andZhu (2013).…”

“…The rents would be much higher when taking into account the potential value of profitable projects for private entrepreneurs. There has long been recognition that the extent of capital market distortions would be significant (Young, 2000;Zhang and Tan, 2007;Brandt and Zhu, 2010;Brandt et al, 2013). Huang and Wang (2010) claim that distortions caused by government interventions are not confined to the capital markets, but are also in the labor and natural resource markets.…”
