Factor Analysis of the Mainland Chinese Version of the Wechsler Adult Intelligence Scale (WAIS-RC) in a Brain-Damaged Sample

Abstract: We factor analyzed the Chinese revision of the Wechsler Adult Intelligence Scale (WAIS-RC) in a sample of 59 individuals with medically diagnosed brain damage. The Chinese subjects consisted of 42 males and 17 females with means for Verbal. Performance, and Full Scale IQ of 83.88 (SD = 22.11), 75.49 (SD = 20.63), and 78.42 (SD = 21.97), respectively. Clear support was found for a general intelligence factor (g) and the Full Scale IQ. Similarly, the two-factor solution provided support for Wechsler's (1981) Ver… Show more

“…738 participants determined to be cognitively impaired in stage 1 were given the neuropsychological examinations in stage 2. The following neuropsychological tests administered by psychologists were used for the evaluation of different cognitive function domains: Wechsler Memory Scale-Revised is a neuropsychological test designed to measure different memory functions, such as logical memory, associative learning, visual recognition and picture recall [13]; Rapid Verbal Retrieve is used to detect language function [14]; Wechsler Adult Intelligence Scale-Chinese revision and Trail Making Test provide information on visual attention, scanning, speed of processing, mental flexibility, and executive functions [15,16], and Activities of Daily Living scale is an appropriate instrument to detect problems in performing activities of daily living [17]. The MMSE and MoCA are typically used to assess global cognitive functioning.…”

“…Verbal initiation and flexibility was evaluated using Semantic Category Verbal Fluency Test (animal) (Lezak, 1995). Plan, sequence and logistical ability were assessed using WAIS-RC Picture Sequencing Subtest (the 1st, 3rd, 5th, and 7th items) (Dai et al, 1990). Concept formation and shifting were assessed with California Card Sorting Test (CCST) (Delis et al, 2000).…”

“…Patients with a stroke history were assessed 3 months after the stroke. In addition to Mini-Mental State Examination (MMSE) (Folstein et al, 1975), the tests can be grouped into five categories: (1) Attention: Digit Span Forward Subtest of the Chinese version of the Wechsler Adult Intelligence Test (WAIS-RC) (Dai et al, 1990). (2) Memory: verbal and visual memory were assessed with the World Health OrganizationUniversity of California-Los Angeles Auditory Verbal Learning Test (WHO-UCLA AVLT) (Maj et al, 1994), and a modified Rey-Osterrieth Complex Figure Test (ROCFT, maximum score 16) (Osterrieth, 1944).…”
