Factor Analyses of the McGill Pain Questionnaire (MPQ) in Acute and Chronic Pain Patients

Abstract: The McGill Pain Questionnaire (MPQ) aims to measure sensory, affective, and evaluative dimensions of pain. However, the structural dimensionality of the MPQ remains somewhat uncertain. Exploratory (EFA) factor analyses were used to investigate the structure of the MPQ based on the responses of a diverse sample of 448 pain patients (M age = 43.1 yr., SD = 19.3). The EFA employed a methodologically sound iterative maximum-likelihood procedure, together with direct oblimin oblique simple structure rotation. Perus… Show more

“…Higher scores represent greater subjective pain. In a sample of individuals with acute and/or chronic pain, the MPQ demonstrated extremely high internal consistency (Cronbach's alpha ¼ 0.98) [32], which is similar to the present sample (MPQ Total Score: Cronbach's alpha ¼ 0.92; Sensory subscale: Cronbach's alpha ¼ 0.87). The Sensory subscale was chosen for examination in this study because it assesses pain location, pattern, quality, and intensity; as such, it was determined to give the most comprehensive assessment of subjective pain experience in our sample.…”

“…Despite its current widespread disuse, this tool continues to be a main reference for the investigation of the experience of pain, including the consideration of verbal language as a variable for clinical investigation of the pain phenomenon. [48][49][50][51][52] Even the positive results related to the reworkings and validations of the MPQ by cultures and languages that are profoundly different from the one originally considered (English) confirm the theoretical importance of this tool. We can say that the questionnaire and its language have successfully passed the most arduous test for a tool of this type: its translation into various languages.…”

“…CPS was evaluated by the visual analogue scale (VAS), [8][9][10] the Van Korff questionnaire (chronic pain grade questionnaire with assessment of grade and intensity of chronic pain of social maladaptation level, class rating and chronic pain intensity, the Mac-Gill pain questionnaire (McGill Pain Questionnaire, (MPQ)). [9][10][11] The severity of anxiety and depression was determined by the hospital scale of assessing anxiety and depression (Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale -HADS), 12 the Beck depression assessment scale, 13 the CES-D questionnaire (Center of Epidimiological Studies of USA-Depression). 14 The assessment of health status of patients was carried out by visual analogue scale (HS-VAS).…”
