Fact-based communication: the Shale Gas Information Platform SHIP

Abstract: In response to an increasingly expressed need for factual information, a science-based information web portal, the Shale Gas Information Platform SHIP, was developed. At the core of the project is the shale gas expert network. It's an international and interdisciplinary group composed of mainly scientists that share their specific knowledge with the public. With a strong focus on factual information, this initiative also strives to serve the scientific community as a publication and knowledge exchange platform… Show more

“…The lack of relevant data, such as 3D seismic surveys and pre-fracking hydraulic drill-hole tests, contrasts with the wide scientific activity initiated by the Damme 3 pilot fracking test and following public debate (Sauter et al 2012;Andruleit et al 2012;Meiners et al 2012;Gordalla et al 2013;Hammes et al 2013;Hübner et al 2013;Kerschke and Schulz 2013;Lange et al 2013;Olsson et al 2013).…”

“…In particular shale gas has received enormous attention by the public recently and early mistakes in the production of shale gas have reduced public acceptance severely. To facilitate objective discussion of the chances and risks of this type of fossil energy, Hübner et al (2013) introduce an internet platform gathering fact-based communication about shale gas: the Shale Gas Information Platform (SHIP). This knowledge exchange platform follows basic principles of being science based, transparent and balanced.…”

“…Enhanced gas recovery is one technology to improve the productivity of depleting reservoirs. In Germany, the CLEAN and MoPa projects were dealt with different scientific aspects of conventional and unconventional gas resources in the context of CO2 storage (Kuehn et al 2012a, b;Huebner et al 2013;Singh et al 2011;Bauer et al 2012). Hammes et al (2013) assessed the unconventional reservoir potential of the upper Permian Zechstein Group in Northern Germany by stratigraphic and sedimentological evaluation of carbonates and organic-rich mudrocks.…”
