Facilitating Power Grid Decarbonization with Distributed Energy Resources: Lessons from the United States

Abstract: Decarbonizing power grids is an essential pillar of global efforts to mitigate climate change impacts. Renewable energy generation is expected to play an important role in electricity decarbonization, although its variability and uncertainty are creating new flexibility challenges for electric grid operators that must match supply with constantly changing demand. Distributed energy resources (DERs)—including distributed generation, demand response, and distributed energy storage—can play an important role in p… Show more

“…The surveys targeted institutional customers in the industry, commerce, and public sectors of Ningbo that use refrigeration and cooling equipment. The survey results show that Ningbo faces many obstacles in financing a city-scale green cooling program (Shen et al 2021). A brief description of these obstacles is presented in Table 1.…”

“…In this model, project developers (e.g., ESCOs) integrate diverse green solutions-such as efficiency improvement, distributed photovoltaic power generation, energy storage, and customer load response-and optimize their use to maximize the value of the bundled services. This model can help customers achieve greater savings and earn income (Shen, Kahrl, and Satchwell 2021).…”

“…In Australia, the share of electricity generation from renewables was 27% in 2021, referring to a 4% increase from 2020 [4]. Renewable electricity generation in the USA doubled from 2008 to 2018 and is continually rising to meet their renewable energy (RE) target [5]. However, renewable generation, such as solar or wind, is uncertain and has a sporadic nature [6].…”

“…Traditionally, these systems involve synchronous generators that rely on fossil resources to maintain mechanical inertia and are helpful as a backup to respond to unforeseen events or even natural disasters [1]. Over the past five years, the path to decarbonization has gained strength across countries such as Canada, the United States [2,3], Turkmenistan, Puerto Rico, and some countries in Latin America, which have signed agreements to control carbon emissions [1,4]. Eliminating petroleum, natural gas, and coal is challenging because many structures use these fossil fuels and changing them will require effort.…”
