Facile Synthesis of Silver Nanoparticles Decorated Magnetic-Chitosan Microsphere for Efficient Removal of Dyes and Microbial Contaminants

Abstract: A facile and rapid synthesis of core-shell type magnetite-chitosan microsphere decorated with silver nanoparticles (MCSM) is described. The composition and structure of the as-synthesized microsphere characterized by various spectroscopic and microscopic techniques demonstrated formation of 3.63 µm MCSM with decoration of silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) having 16 ± 2.5 nm size. The thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) data showed good thermal stability, while vibrating sample magnetometer (VSM) analysis indicated the… Show more

“…This was responsible for reduction in rate of adsorption obtained at pH above 7.82. Similar trends have been previously reported in different studies (Giwa et al 2015;Inyinbor et al 2015;Ramalingam et al 2015). Consequently, all batch adsorption experiments were, therefore, carried out at pH 3.4.…”

“…They are nonbiodegradable pollutants that affect water quality by causing foul odour, preventing light penetration, increasing chemical oxygen demand, decreasing dissolved oxygen level, and eventually leading to death of aquatic lives. They have been found to be nephrotoxic and also induce toxicity on reproductive system (Das et al 2006(Das et al , 2008Baskaran et al 2011;Chen et al 2012;Ramalingam et al 2015;Tan et al 2015).…”

“…12 Silver nanocomposite hydrogels, combining the properties of an organic hydrogel and inorganic nanostructured materials, have recently gained significant attention. 13 The synergetic effects between the organic polymer and silver nanoparticles are responsible for introducing new properties to the formed nanocomposite. Compared to classic hydrogels, nanocomposites have been introduced in numerous applications, such as catalysis, 14 design of sensors 15 and biotechnology.…”

“…[5][6][7] Silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) present an advantageous alternative to antibiotics, as they have efficient antimicrobial activity toward a broad range of microorganisms, but are unlikely to induce bacteria to develop resistance, due to their multifaceted and complex antimicrobial mechanisms. [8][9][10][11][12] Products containing nanosilver are…”
