Facile synthesis of calcium silicate hydrate using sodium dodecyl sulfate as a surfactant assisted by ultrasonic irradiation

Abstract: Calcium silicate hydrate (CSH) consisting of nanosheets has been successfully synthesized assisted by a tip ultrasonic irradiation (UI) method using calcium nitrate (Ca(NO3)·4H2O), sodium silicate (Na2SiO3·9H2O) and sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS) in water. Systematic studies found that reaction time of ultrasonic irradiation and concentrations of surfactant (SDS) in the system were important factors to control the crystallite size and morphologies. The products were characterized by X-ray power diffraction (XRD)… Show more

“…The FTIR spectrum also shows the presence of stretching vibrations of Si-O bonds at 1085 cm −1 [27]. Moreover, the characteristic band for the CO 3 2− group occurs in the spectrum at 1481 cm −1 , which is due to the exposure of the samples to air leading to the incorporation of CO 2 [28]. The broad band at 3424 cm −1 is attributed to the stretching vibrations of O-H groups in H 2 O or hydroxyl groups on the surface of TNT arrays with a wide range of hydrogen bond strengths.…”

“…Hence, the adsorption process was a spontaneous endothermic process with entropy increase. This finding was attained because apart from the high specific surface area and abundant pore canals, abundant active groups, such as -OH and -O-were present on the surface of MCS [11,21,22] . Therefore, the process needed to absorb a certain energy to overcome the activation energy and exhibited the heat absorption phenomenon.…”

“…Hence, there is a continuous need for developing new adsorption materials with high adsorption efficiency, easy preparation and low-cost, environmental friend and little secondary pollution. Due to mesoporous calcium silicate (MCS) high specific surface area, porosity and negative charge strength [10,11], its application of water treatment gains attention from the researchers gradually. But the application in the removal of heavy metal ions is still not much [12].…”

“…Recently, CaSiO 3 has attracted increasing attention due to its excellent HAp-forming ability and outstanding proliferation ability of osteoblast-like cells [4,5]. However, its inherent brittleness causes an insufficient mechanical strength that makes it hardly able to provide structural support for the new bone ingrowth, which impedes its clinical application in load-bearing bone repair [6,7].…”
