In the present study, a mesoporous photocatalyst based on Au–Pd nanoparticles incorporated into g-C3N4 was prepared by a coassembly method using melamine as the carbon and nitrogen source, polyvinyl pyrrolidone as the dispersing agent, and pulse laser ablation in liquid technique for preparing gold nanoparticles and subsequent decoration with Pd nanoparticles. At the final stage, Au–Pd/g-C3N4 nano-photocatalyst was obtained via low-ramping pyrolysis in an argon atmosphere. The activity of the catalyst was related to its structure, which was characterized by high-resolution transmission electron microscopy, field-emission scanning electron microscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy, and Brunauer–Emmett–Teller analysis. The results demonstrated that the Au–Pd-containing catalyst exhibited superior performance compared to its counterparts containing monometallic nanoparticles. The influence of variables such as reaction temperature, time of irradiation, amount of hydrogen peroxide, and amount of metal nanoparticles was investigated. Under optimized conditions, the Au–Pd/g-C3N4 photocatalyst showed benzene conversion of 26% at a phenol selectivity of 100%, giving no dihydroxylated byproducts. The catalyst was highly stable and recyclable, thus showing promise for the direct conversion of benzene to phenol. Time-dependent density functional theory (TD-DFT) calculations describe the activation of the oxidant by charge transferring from the metal clusters to the graphitized carbon nitride support and explain why the Au–Pd/g-C3N4 composite (rather than Au/g-C3N4) has superior efficiency in promoting the benzene-to-phenol conversion. The same DFT calculations showed that the Pd/g-C3N4 composite cannot catalyze the same processes.

This work demonstrates the one‐pot, seed‐free synthesis of unique flower‐like Au/Pd alloy nanostructures and their self‐assembly on a graphene support in an aqueous medium. The as‐prepared nanostructures were characterized thoroughly by TEM, UV/Vis spectrophotometry, XRD, and X‐ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). The bifunctional electrocatalytic activity towards the oxidation of methanol and reduction of oxygen was investigated thoroughly. The results reveal that the Au/Pd alloy nanostructures show a composition‐dependent electrochemical activity. The Au/Pd alloy nanostructure with a flower‐like morphology shows superior electrocatalytic activity compared to its monometallic Pd counterpart and a commercially available Pd/C. Furthermore, the graphene support tunes the electrocatalytic performance of the Au/Pd alloy nanoflowers and substantiates their promising energy‐conversion applications for use in fuel cells.

Preparation of FePd‐RGO Bimetallic Composites with High Catalytic Activity for Formic Acid Electro‐Oxidation

FePd-RGO composites through the growth of uniformly dispersed iron-palladium bimetallic nanoparticles (NPs) on reduced graphene oxide (RGO) nanosheets were prepared by a two-step method. The firstly formed Fe is used as the seed for the subsequent Pd growth. The formation of Fe NPs on RGO in the first step is performed by an in-situ reduction reaction with the reducer ethylene glycol under oil bath at 180 ℃. NPs in the as-prepared FePd-RGO have an average particle size of 6.5 nm, and Pd is added to one side of Fe which leads to the formation of Fe-Pd bimetallic interfaces. As compared with the commercial Pd black at the same loading, the composites have higher electro-catalytic activity, better electrochemical stability and higher resistance to CO poisoning for formic acid electro-oxidation.
