Facile Spray-Coating Process for the Fabrication of Tunable Adhesive Superhydrophobic Surfaces with Heterogeneous Chemical Compositions Used for Selective Transportation of Microdroplets with Different Volumes

Abstract: In this paper, tunable adhesive superhydrophobic ZnO surfaces have been fabricated successfully by spraying ZnO nanoparticle (NP) suspensions onto desired substrates. We regulate the spray-coating process by changing the mass percentage of hydrophobic ZnO NPs (which were achieved by modifying hydrophilic ZnO NPs with stearic acid) in the hydrophobic/hydrophilic ZnO NP mixtures to control heterogeneous chemical composition of the ZnO surfaces. Thus, the water adhesion on the same superhydrophobic ZnO surface co… Show more

“…Therefore, taking account of how to gain tunable adhesion in a superhydrophobic surface, how f 1 can be adjusted using surface morphology becomes very important. 20 and stereo-complex co-crystallization, 21 have been developed to realize a tunable adhesive superhydrophobic surface with heterogeneous chemical compositions. Inevitably, most of these methods suffer from the use of expensive lowsurface-energy components (e.g.…”

“…Depending on the contact angle hysteresis (CAH) values, superhydrophobicity can be further categorized into different states. 5 While some superhydrophobic surfaces might exhibit high CAH and strong adhesion to water (also known as adhesive superhydrophobicity), 4,6,7 the surfaces of interest in this paper refer to those having very low CAHs and thus high water repellency.…”

“…With this goal in mind, we began to seek an engineering-based solution to the problem. Aware of spray-coating and evaporative approaches for formation of multilayered and decorated particles or substrates [33][34][35], we developed a packed-bed, flow-based approach to achieve the same result.…”
