Facile preparation of yttrium and aluminum co-doped ZnO via a sol–gel route for photocatalytic hydrogen production

Abstract: Yttrium and aluminum co-doped ZnO were successfully synthesized by the sol-gel method, showing high photocatalytic activity for hydrogen production (5.71 mmol h À1 g À1 ) in the water-lactic acid system under visible-light irradiation for the first time, exhibiting excellent stability and recyclability. As a kind of unique metal oxide, 1,2 because of its excellent optical and electrical properties, zinc oxide (ZnO) is a potential candidate for a variety of practical applications including semiconductors, eld-e… Show more

“…Additionally, Al-doped ZnO films benefit the visible-light photocatalytic performance by its high transmittance in visible region [7]. It has been reported that co-doping of two dopants into ZnO could greatly enhance its visible-light responses [8,9].…”

“…Therefore, the VB and CB potentials of Co-2TPABTz and Ag NPs were listed in Table S2. [25,26] Typical photocatalytic experiments were set up as follows. Photocatalytic performances of as-synthesized samples were evaluated in a closed gas circulation system equipped with a Pyrex glass reaction cell.…”

“…As for their promising light-harvesting and electron transfer properties, Ag NPs have been successfully incorporated with M-complexes and underexplored in photocatalytic applications [11,23]. Herein, we take advantage of a new photocatalytic system (Scheme S1) composed of Ag NPs and a cobalt molecular catalyst (Co-2TPABTz) to study the overall photo-induced catalytic process [13,[24][25][26], and it exhibit efficient photocatalytic activitiy and a high level of stability under visible light irradiation ( > 420 nm). In addition, this work can provide some new insights for the smart design and preparation of inexpensive and high-efficiency photocatalyts.…”

“…In order to enhance the photocatalytic activity of TiO 2 , Xu et al prepared a series of rare earth metals ions (La 3 þ , Ce 3 þ , Er 3 þ , Pr 3 þ , Gd 3 þ , Nd 3 þ and Sm 3 þ ) doped TiO 2 by sol-gel [6]. In our previous work [7], yttrium and aluminum co-doped ZnO synthesized by the sol-gel method showed high photocatalytic activity for hydrogen production (5.71 mmol g À 1 h À 1 ) in the water-lactic acid system under visible-light irradiation for the first time, exhibiting excellent stability and recyclability. SnO 2 is a semiconductor with a wide band gap (3.5 eV), which is chemically and thermally stable.…”
