Facile In Situ Synthesis of Co(OH)2–Ni3S2 Nanowires on Ni Foam for Use in High-Energy-Density Supercapacitors

Abstract: Ni3S2 nanowires were synthesized in situ using a one-pot hydrothermal reaction on Ni foam (NF) for use in supercapacitors as a positive electrode, and various contents (0.3−0.6 mmol) of Co(OH)2 shells were coated onto the surfaces of the Ni3S2 nanowire cores to improve the electrochemical properties. The Ni3S2 nanowires were uniformly formed on the smooth NF surface, and the Co(OH)2 shell was formed on the Ni3S2 nanowire surface. By direct NF participation as a reactant without adding any other Ni source, Ni3S… Show more

“…Figure S5a-d (ESI) displays the Nyquist plots for all the samples exhibiting partial semicircles in the high-frequency region followed by the almost vertical lines in the low-frequency region. The partial semicircles recorded in the high-frequency region confirmed the faradaic reaction for all samples, as depicted earlier in the CV analysis [44], whereas the almost vertical lines in the low-frequency region revealed the diffusion of redox species as well as their kinetics [45]. It must be reminded that the sample washed with ethanol (NiCoAl-Ethanol) possessed the highest specific surface area compared to its counterparts.…”

“…Two prominent peaks positioned at 874.26 and 856.60 eV can be assigned to Ni 2p 1/2 and Ni 2p 3/2 and a spin-orbit splitting of 17.7 eV, which confirms the existence of Ni 2+ and Ni 3+ . The peaks at 880 and 861.7 eV are their satellite peaks [22,23]. In the O 1s spectrum (Figure 3e), the peak at 531.4 eV comes from hydroxyl oxygen in Co(OH) 2 [14].…”

“…All the electrodes displayed slight semicircles in the high-frequency region, whereas the almost straight lines were observed in the low-frequency region. Generally, a slight semicircle in the high-frequency region indicates the faradaic reaction [ 53 ]. While the almost straight line in the low-frequency region informs about the diffusion of redox species and their kinetics [ 30 , 54 ].…”
