Facile Green Synthesis of Titanium Dioxide Nanoparticles by Upcycling Mangosteen (Garcinia mangostana) Pericarp Extract

Abstract: In the present report, green synthesis of titanium dioxide nanoparticles (TiO2 NPs) was performed by upcycling mangosteen (Garcinia mangostana) pericarp extract (methanol and ethyl acetate extracts). Field emission scanning electron microscopy images revealed an aggregated structure with a highly porous network of TiO2 NPs. TiO2 NPs synthesized with ethyl acetate extract (EtOAc-TiO2 NPs) exhibited more monodispersity and possessed smoother surfaces than the control TiO2 NPs (Con-TiO2 NPs) and TiO2 NPs synthesi… Show more

“…The amorphous nature of EGCG-TiO 2 NPs might be explained by the intercalation of catechins into the 3D structure formed by the intermediary products during condensation. In contrast with our results, other studies generated anatase or rutile TiO 2 NPs by green approaches depending on the calcination temperature applied [53,64]. However, our results were in accordance with those of Sankar et al [65] that produced amorphous TiO 2 NPs by using TTIP and Azadirachta indica aqueous leaf extract.…”

“…Studies approved that the pericarp extract had anti-proliferative potential against MCF-7 cells by inducing apoptotic cell death. In addition, it induced apoptosis in human breast cancer (SKBR3) cells by investigation of morphological changes and oligonucleosomal DNA fragments (Ahn et al, 2022). Several studies showed as cytotoxic activity of Mangosteen Peel Extract (MPE) against MCF-7 cells designed by using MTT test, and were analyze using Probit analysis to induce IC50.…”

“…2 A and B. M. arvensis ethanolic extracts and pure Nb-N-TiO 2 [ 50 ]. Simultaneously, in some previous investigations, TiO 2 nanoparticles functionalized from ethanolic extracts of M. arvensis have exhibited absorbance peaks at 291 nm and 318 nm [ 51 ]. Conversely, alternative research has reported that TiO 2 synthesized using aqueous leaf extracts of M. arvensis showed absorbance peaks ranging from 388 to 413 nm [ 52 ].…”
