“…Recently, thin-film composite membranes for organic solvent nanofiltration were synthesized by cross-linking PEI onto PBI substrates. 28 In another study, a nanophase separation structure was created in membranes for vanadium flow batteries by grafting PEI onto a PBI backbone. 29 However, to our knowledge, no results have been reported for the use of PBI/PEI composite polymer blend AEMs for desalination applications.…”

“…The resulting membrane achieved a water flux of 19.2 L•m −2 •h −1 and (J s /J w ) ratio of <0.5 g•L −1 in FO. To improve the adhesion of the selective layer to the support, Tashvigh and Chung [165] cross-linked the monomer dibromo-p-xylene to the surface of a polybenzimidazole (PBI) membrane, followed by exposing the cross-linked surface to PEI to form an ultra-thin selective layer. This membrane, however, showed a molecular weight cut-off of~350 Da, which makes it only suitable for FO when using draw solutes with a larger diameter than the pores.…”

“…Cellulose [35] Here, there are the representative cross-linked porous supports that are prepared through the reaction with multi-functional cross-linking agent after forming the porous structures by the phase inversion separation technique as shown in Figure 1. One is a cross-linked polybenzimidazole (PBI) membrane, which can be prepared via the crosslinking reaction with multi-functional alkyl halides [37][38][39], epoxies [40], and acyl chlorides [41]. These reactions lead to the formation of covalent carbon-nitrogen bonds, result- [35] Here, there are the representative cross-linked porous supports that are prepared through the reaction with multi-functional cross-linking agent after forming the porous structures by the phase inversion separation technique as shown in Figure 1.…”
